    Vintage doornobs at Rejuvenation

(My little disclaimer: I’ve toyed endlessly with the virtues of posting photographs that we’ve been taking with Instagram. Using that format has been a fabulous challenge for us as we once again document so much of what we see, day to day. But then again, they aren’t really photographs. And yet they do reflect so well the artistic inspiration that we bring to our portrait work. To view more of our Intagram shots, visit our profiles at instagram.com/will_d)

Fifty and Counting for the Parkers

Jerry and Diana Parker have been dear friends of ours going on seven years now. Despite our age difference (which you’ll see is substantial), they are both such wonderful people that we’ve been lucky to count them a part of our lives. Their family of six children gets together every few years– a tremendous accomplishment with various clans around the country– but this year was particularly special because Jerry and Diana celebrated their 50th year of marriage this year as well. So every convened here, in Portland, to fete their parents and their family, and we were lucky enough to be able to document their history through a portrait session. We took them to one of the perennial family portrait spots in Portland, the International Rose Test Gardens. I’m holding back on the group portraits but I just had to share this image of Jerry and Diana because I think that it perfectly expresses what a life together can be.

Mallory and John’s Mexican Destination Wedding

First, I have to say that the photo that I opened the blog post was one of my favorites from our trip. It was taken moments before another photo you’ll see in a moment, just before the guys toasted John, and the glasses seem so static compared to the anticipation of the moment. But, I digress.

We met Mallory and John years ago, in the summer of 2008, during one of our first weddings. John’s sister Katherine had a beautiful summer wedding at the Oregon Golf Club and Mallory accompanied John as his date. They were dating and attending Oregon State University and I remember thinking how adorable they were together. Fast forward three years and Mallory calls and says that they’re getting married. And for the last three years, she’s loved the pictures of Katherine and Dane’s wedding so much that she already knows that she wants us to be their photographers.

But instead of a wedding close to home, Mallory and John decided to marry in Puerta Vallarta, Mexico at the gorgeous Velas Vallarta Resort. It is one of the premier resorts in Vallarta and is actually the hotel where the president of Mexico stays when he comes to the area. As soon as we arrived I could see why. The architecture was beautiful and the setting pristine. They played tourists with their family and friends for a few days. The weather was a bit cloudy, not what you would expect in February in Mexico. But their wedding day arrived and out came the sun! They were married out on the beach overlooking the bay and it was, dare I say, perfect.

We normally have the bride surprise the groom but we switched it up and let John surprise Mal.

As a photographer, I love the moments when I really am just a fly on the wall. Mallory was on her way to her first look and her mom and cousin were buzzing with excitement. For just a moment, Mal paused and looked off, and you could almost see the calm come over her face. It was beautiful.

We try to use all of the venue, not just the obvious spots, because it adds so much dimension to the day. I loved the front facade and so we popped here for just a minute. The symmetry was perfect.

The resort was settled on the north part of the bay,in Nuevo Vallarta. I love the rolling hills in the background.

I adored Mallory’s dress, with the ruffled detail down the back line of the dress.

    Lillian Paige is One!

If you’ve been following our blog for a while you know that life took a crazy turn when we decided to have another baby. But believe it or not, that baby is now a bouncy, bubbling one-year old. My life over the last year has been full of changes, and one of them was a decision to scale our business back a bit as I re-imagined how life and a studio would coincide with a baby in the family. I’m happy to say that balance is starting to come again. It’s an interesting thing, being a mom who works and lives and mothers all together. I’m trying to learn to be honest with myself about what I can really be in my life. Like all moms, I think that I question myself much, much more than I ought. I wonder if I’m doing all of the right things. But I know that part of myself is buoyed by being artistic in a way that I have not found I can replicate in any other way. Being a photographer continues to bring me satisfaction and joy so much. Being a part of my clients lives is such a blessing. More and more, I see our studio growing again and I’m excited at the prospects.

Paige, on the other hand, seems to have life all figured out. She is very observant, quiet, until she takes an interest in something and then her excitement spills out. Just like her early babyhood, she is still taking the world by her sweet but firm grip. Last week, we did a birthday session with her at my mother-in-law’s home. She’s right in the stage between crawling and walking and I’m so glad that we documented it in this way, more than just day to day photographs. Our life is in those little moments but this time is grand.
